Was curious Not all of these Mullard rectifiers can be an equivalent for the 5U4G, can they? I can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere I look Being a tube-noob, I'd hate to use the wrong rectifier and possibly muck things up!
Your comments are all appreciated Messages: 1, Location: Great Lakes. I have a bunch of these tubes 5u4gb some nos and some used. RocknRollAug 29, Messages: 2, Location: RIP It's much less sought than the other two, so it's way cheaper but from what I hear is superior.
MikEAug 29, I get it now. You are looking for a Mullard tube. Sorry I can't help there I do not have any Mullards. Rock, thanks for the offer. Just thought a matching Mullard for my amp like the GZ30 in my pre would be kinda cool is all. MikE, I'm confused about your statement I can't use either of these Mullard rectifiers for my amp, can I?
From what I've read so far if I'm understanding it correctly is that a little sag that the 5U4G provides at startup is a good thing that it isn't rough on the output and drivers I don't even know if this matters or makes any sense.Hallo Herr Ohrem.
Antique radios, Old Time Radios. CBS-Columbia Inc. Quantity of Models at Radiomuseum.

It's my first Valve amp so I know nothing. Have a word with Watford Valves - they will sort you out. Sylvania JAN x 2 Svetlana 5C3S x 2 Westinghouse 5U4G x 2. GE 5U4GB x 2 RCA 5U4G x 2 I tried RCA which are better again except for a flabby bass. Have worked out my next direction, which I hope will work for me. I'd rather not have to buy a list like you've got there.
Nothing wrong with asking questions on old threads - it's part of the reason why they're available. After some reading, it would seem not.

Welcome to TubeDepot
Collection of Benedetto Pirani I. You reach this tube or valve page from a search after clicking the "tubes" tab or by clicking a tube on a radio model page.
You will find thousands of tubes or valves with interesting links. You even can look up radio models with a certain tube line up. Country: Worldwide. Other shape e.
Octal Int.Posted: Feb Fri 26, am. What's the difference - I'm assuming that they are interchangeable to some extent. Other than bulb shape and size, the later ones were somewhat improved in their ratings as far as maximum current and voltages.
The 5U4GB will always replace a 5U4G, but not the other way around in some television sets where the rectifier tube worked hard. But for radios, I don't see much difference in what is used. The 5U4G has a larger voltage drop. It's enough for me to prefer keeping 5U4G's in older gear that was designed for them. Higher rated 5U4's were originally designed for TV. Don't think any radios need 5U4GB unless for the shorter height. Posted: Feb Fri 26, pm. Posted: May Sat 14, pm. That 5v is a non issue You can compare 10 new 5U4 and voltage drop will likely vary more than that Like Tom said the 5 volts drop is no problem.
Drawing too much current due to a problem in the radio is the real problem and could burn up the power tranformer. That is why bad caps and out of spec resistors should be replaced.
Also it is a good idea to check the sets current draw. Posted: May Sun 15, am. Doc, in your place, I'd run that radio on either a Variac or bucking transformer on general principles, like all gear of its generation, for it was designed for lower line voltages than those generally obtaining nowadays. This is especially true of power tubes.

What is the best replacement? I am thinking of a Mullard. Any suggestions? Does anyone have an extra to sell to this forum member, because I would rather deal here than eBay!
However the manual states" this tube the 5AR4 may be replaced with the 5Y3 rectifier tube; but note, a difference in performance may be heard, the 5AR4 performs better than the 5Y3 when operating voltage is low". Some maintain they can hear a difference between various 5AR4's and some say there is no difference only improved longevity with a Mullard.
I do not have an extra one, but here's my. I have not had good luck with Sovteks. Quiet no buzzingand pretty reliable so far. Available at a variety of places, but I've always had some decent experiences with Tube Depot on line. From what I can find on the Heathkit AA, you will be fine with using either tube. But these tubes do have different ratings, so it is always best to use caution when swapping rectifier tubes. Things you will have to consider are:. There are also differences in the performance of the two tubes.
The primary difference that you may hear is due to the internal plate resistance. For the 5Y3, this resistance is around Ohms. This will result in lower plate voltage and lower total output power. This will give you a compression effect, since there will be more voltage drop during loud signals, than during low level signals. This compression will be much stronger using the 5Y3.
